Ad Review: Cigarette Box Covers

At a friends house last week I noticed her cigarette box was encased in a hearts and rainbow box which her mother who lives in Switzerland had sent her. It seems people there, are sporting these cases to cover the
health warning labels that are now covering cigarette boxes.

Apparently in countries such as Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and England cigarette warning labels are much bigger, include more health warnings, and appear on the front and back of the packages. As opposed to the U.S. where although labels include four warnings written on the side of cigarette packages, they have the smallest. I think the most effective of these, is this disturbing image on a cigarette pack I couldn't help but notice in a store in Thailand.

Its interesting to be able to gauge that advertising is working, when you see consumers purchasing ad blocking devices. In a study taken in Canada, Australia, the U.K. and U.S.A., Canadian smokers — who had the biggest, most graphic warning labels of the four countries had the biggest success. Worth mentioning is the grand daddy of ad blockers, Tivo released the results of a study that demonstrated the inevitable: lower product sales within TiVo homes. But conversely the flip side of this shows that, " TV advertising does work (after all, sales were higher in non-DVR homes)
